Parents as Teachers Sets High Standards

Parents as Teachers (PAT) is an international leader in the field of early childhood parent education and family support, providing an evidence-based model for serving families throughout pregnancy into the child’s first year of school. Founded in Missouri in 1984, Parents as Teachers is a nonprofit organization that serves more than 250,000 families in all 50 U.S. states, more than 100 Tribal schools and communities, and six countries. PAT’s affiliate programs deliver services that equip parents with knowledge and resources to prepare their children to learn, grow and develop to realize their full potential.


More than 15 independent studies have confirmed that Parents as Teachers makes a measurable difference in the lives of parents and their children. Our model program services have been shown to:

  • Increase parent knowledge of early childhood development and improve parenting practices
  • Provide early detection of developmental delays and health issues
  • Prevent child abuse and neglect
  • Increase children’s school readiness and school success


High-quality Parents as Teachers affiliates regularly monitor compliance with the Essential Requirements and pursue continuous quality improvement annually by completing the Affiliate Performance Report.

The Parents as Teachers Quality Endorsement and Improvement Process helps ensure that Parents as Teachers affiliates are achieving fidelity to the Parents as Teachers model and facilitates continuous quality improvement. Parents as Teachers affiliates are required to participate in the Parents as Teachers sponsored Quality Endorsement and Improvement Process by their 4th year of implementation and every 5 years thereafter.
